Apple's iPhone and iPad automatically capture images in the HEIF picture format. The file extension for these images is HEIC. With just a few clicks, Windows 10 or Windows 11 can display HEIC files. Instead, you can convert them to common JPEGs and see them elsewhere.
How to See HEIC Files in Windows 10's Photos App
With only a few steps, you can add compatibility for HEIC picture files on current versions of Windows 10. Also in Windows 11, this functions.
First, double-click a HEIC file you found in File Explorer on your computer. Choose "Photos" when prompted to choose the application you wish to open it in.
"The HEIF Image Extension is required to display this file," the Photos app will inform you. In order to download it from the Microsoft Store, click the "Download and install it now" link. It may be downloaded for free, and installing it won't take long.
Choose "Yes" when Windows asks if you meant to switch programs.
By doing so, the Microsoft Store app will launch the HEIF Image Extensions page. Click the "Install" button to download and install support for HEIC image files (which use the HEIF format.)
HEIC images may now be opened in the Photos app and viewed just like any other image file, such as a JPEG, PNG, GIF, or BMP.
Your HEIC image files will also automatically create and display thumbnails in Windows 10's File Explorer.
